At age 19, I worked on a flatboat that journeyed down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. I became interested in law and started attending court sessions. I tried to make up for a lack of formal education by reading every book I could get my hands on.

My father, who served in the Civil War, was a storekeeper, postmaster, notary public, and justice of the peace in the small town of Plymouth Notch where I was born. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen led the first air expedition to the North Pole while I was president.

I suffered from chronic laryngitis and was allergic to dust, mold, pollen, cats, and certainly greenery, especially Christmas trees. My daughter was in eighth grade when we moved into the White House.
