I joined with a group of 23 other young men that marched on the governor’s palace to protest his connection to the British government. We removed two hundred muskets and three hundred swords from the palace and gave them to the local militia. Later, I received training under General Andrew Lewis, who had served under George Washington at Fort Necessity during the French and Indian War.

As a young man, I decided to head west and study law. First, I stopped in Buffalo to visit my favorite uncle, a wealthy farmer. He introduced me to several prominent lawyers. I began studying law with one of them. I never did go further west.

My predecessor as president appointed me to the position of assistant secretary of the navy. I worked to increase the number of naval ships and gave orders to Commodore George Perry about moving his ships from Japan to Hong Kong to monitor Spanish ships.

I attended the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. After graduation, I won a prestigious Rhodes Scholarshipo to study at Oxford University in England.
