As my term as president neared its end, I attempted to win my party’s nomination at the convention in the newly completed Tammany Hall in New York. I told my supporters that a united party, with me as the candidate, stood the best chance of blocking the drive for black political equality in the South. Instead, the convention picked Horatio Seymour.
