While serving as U.S. Minister in Paris, I wrote to my future successor in the White House back in the States about corruption in the French court. Sponsored by my friend the Marquis de Lafayette, my daughter Patsy was placed in a classy convent school. I was jealous of how quickly she learned to speak fluent French.
