Presidents Quiz – May 2019

Starting in 2019-20, the presidents will be divided into three groups. The breakdown of the groups is not finalized yet. The themes are in the process of revision. All the changes will be in place by July 1.

Great Britain agreed to the Rush-Bagot Agreement. This was the final version of a treaty that I negotiated as secretary of state for my predecessor. After a few months as president, I embarked on a 16-week tour of New England. I wanted to foster a sense of national unity through public appearances and private meetings with local leaders.

At a cost of $15 million, the U.S. acquired more than 29,600 square miles of new territory in southwest Arizona and New Mexico. “Bleeding Kansas” became a well known phrase because of a guerilla war in that territory between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers.

I vetoed the Soldiers’ Bonus Bill that would have provided 20-year annuities for veterans at an overall cost of $2 billion. However, Congress overrode my veto. I withdrew the last U.S. Marines from the Dominican Republic. They had originally been sent there by my predecessor’s predecessor.

In my second month in office, I made an eight-day European visit in Brussels. Following an attack on a U.S. plane, I ordered reconnaissance flights off of North Korea to be resumed. I declared that Latin American nations must be responsible for their own social and economic progress.
