Identify the president from each clue. Each president in this range is the answer once.

  1. Japan and Germany agreed that, in case of an attack by the Soviet Union against either country, the other would join in the fight against the communists. Fascist governments in Italy and Spain joined the pact the following year.
  2. I lost my bid for reelection when my predecessor ran as a third party candidate and split our party’s vote.
  3. For a man who was normally so quiet, I had a way of keeping my staff on their toes. I occasionally pressed all the buttons in the Oval Office – sending bells ringing throughout the White House – and then hid. I wanted to see who was working.
  4. My wife was the first First Lady to address the nation via radio. When she held a White House tea for congressional wives, she invited Jessie DePriest, who was married to black Representative Oscar DePriest. Newspapers in the South howled, accusing the First Lady of "defiling" the White House.
  5. The U.S. Air Force "sniffer plane" was collecting air samples off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula when it gathered evidence of radioactivity, confirming that the Soviet Union had tested a nuclear device. The Soviets’ test had come faster than expected.
  6. Free silver forces prevailed in the Democratic Party, repudiating the pro-gold incumbent and nominating 36-year-old Nebraska lawyer William Jennings Bryan after his dramatic "cross of gold" speech. I defeated him 271-176 in the Electoral College.
  7. After my presidency, Barry Goldwater asked me to rally our party behind him in the presidential election. However, he had called my administration a "dime-store New Deal," which annoyed me. However, in the spirit of party unity, I recorded a television spot for Goldwater and made an appearance at the National Convention that nominated him.
  8. During my run for president, my campaign team sought the endorsement of Babe Ruth, who was just becoming a national hero. Ruth’s reaction was, "Hell no, I’m a Democrat." But I did shake hands with Ruth when I attended the World Series.
  9. My vice president Charles Fairbanks hoped to get my endorsement for our party’s nomination to replace me. But he lost any chance he had to do that when he hosted a luncheon in my honor and served Manhattan cocktails. Even though he was a non-drinker himself, that lost him the favor of the powerful Temperance Movement.
  10. This poster appeared while I was president.
