2017 Outstanding Seniors
Outstanding Senior players are nominated by their local Districts and selected at the National Tournament by the AGLOA Tournament Council. The criteria for selection include a long-term Academic Games career and overall excellence in Academic Games. However, criterion #2 is how these 12th graders have assisted in developing or enriching their own Academic Games district and league programs over the years. Each of the four 2017 Academic Games Outstanding Seniors exhibited all these qualities in spades.
  • Martha Baldwin's coach at Jackson High School (MI) says, "I have depended on her since she started as a sixth grader to help me in all aspects of coaching." As a result, she became the first player he ever nominated for an Outstanding Senior award.
  • Dawn Bordenave was the first player from the New Orleans Homeschoolers Academic Games team to enter Junior division and then Senior division. She learned the games so well she was able to help all the younger homeschoolers to be successful.
  • Already his coach's "right hand," Eric Macadangdang kept the Montour High (PA) team together when the coach was transferred to the middle school.
  • Sarah Palumbo was the driving force in getting an academic games program started at her high school in Palm Beach County FL. Her efforts culminated this year in full teams for local competition in all three subject areas.
  • Angel Phillips and James Stevenson became the first players nominated for the Outstanding Senior Award by their coach at Cass Tech in Detroit. Because of other responsibilities, he had to rely on both these seniors to help break in a new coach.
  • Arriving at a high school without an academic games coach after playing in New Orleans since 4th grade, Autumn Richards organized practices and coordinated rides to tournaments. She developed a "coaching culture" within her group that has led to multiple championships.
Each Outstanding Senior will be highlighted in more detail in the monthly AGazines at agloa.org.
2017 Outstanding Educators
Outstanding academic games coaches have been honored for over 40 years for their major contributions in their own district programs, plus their efforts at the national tournament. Four teachers with over 60 years of combined experience in academic games received honors at Oglebay.
  • A veteran of 21 years in academic games, Antonio Johnson (Cass Tech High School, Detroit) has won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Michigan State Tournament. He is always on call to help students from his own and other schools.
  • Dr. Vivian Lin (Martin Luther King Elementary), called "the bedrock of the Ann Arbor Academic Games teams," coaches six games across the three subject areas and has led her school to unprecedented success at the state and national levels.
  • Betty Smith (Weir High School) has won multiple Teacher of the Year awards in Hancock County WV. Wrote her nominator, "There would be no academic games there without Betty!"
  • When Honey Bee Taranto (Jefferson Parish LA) was hospitalized for a long period of time, she enlisted the aid of former students to coach her teams. No wonder her players love her.
Each Outstanding Educator will be highlighted in more detail in the monthly AGazines at agloa.org.
