While I was president, Congress passed a Compromise set of five bills that many Americans hoped would be the solution to the increasing hostility between the North and South. Part of the compromise was the Fugitive Slave Law. Also, California was admitted into the Union as a free state.

From my time in the military, I knew all the tricks the Pentagon used to get more money from Congress. As president, I resisted them because I worried about the dangers of an arms race and the impact that continued high military spending would have on the economy. One of the most important pieces of legislation I signed into law was the USA Patriot Act. My successor, from the opposite party, signed a four-year extension of three key provisions of the Act: roving wiretaps, searches of business records, and surveillance of individuals suspected of terrorist activities.
