I was born in a log cabin. My father worked as a bank janitor and hotel porter at a tavern. He died when I was four years old. With my family thrown into poverty, my brother and I were apprenticed to a local tailor. But we both ran away to a neighboring state where I grew up and eventually entered politics.

I played college football for a team nicknamed “The Poets.” I didn’t write poetry during my life, but I did author over ten books including Six Crises, Real Peace, No More Vietnams, and my memoirs.
